The countries of the world have been swallowed up into super states which are in a perpetual state of war. Oceania is one of these states. The totalitarian government uses a figure head known as Big Brother to maintain it’s iron grip on peoples hearts and minds. Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth. His job is to edit old newspaper reports to ensure that they match the policies of the party.
But when Winston falls in love he finds himself straying further and further from the governments oppressive rules. Until he finds himself detained by the Thought Police and imprisoned in the Ministry of Love where he awaits his visit to room 101.
The influence this book has had on modern culture is undeniable. Terms like big brother and the thought police are used daily by people who probably don’t even know where they came from. This book still serves as a powerful reminder to be wary of what we are told by those that rule us.
