Triffids are plants that grow to around seven feet.  They can uproot and walk.  They kill with a venomous barb.  Though deadly carnivores, they are grown in large numbers because of the oil they produce.  A risk, but a manageable one.  Bill Masen works on one of the Triffid farms.

After an accident where Bill’s eyes are sprayed with Triffid venom he is hospitalized.  His eyes bandaged until they heal.

As fate would have it the night before his bandages are due to come off the world experiences the most spectacular meteorite shower ever seen.  Disappointment turns to bitter sweet relief the following morning when he awakens to find that everyone who watched the shower is now blind.

With civilization collapsing around him and escaped triffids running lose, Bill unites with the few renaming sighted as they attempt to flee London and start anew.
