By the middle of the 21st century the world is reliant on bio-fuel which is produced on the planet St Libra and sent to Earth through a wormhole located in Newcastle, England.

Sidney Hurst is a police officer in Newcastle.  Policing in 2042 is a mine field of bureaucracy, politics, and the ever present media. Careers can be made or destroyed by a single action.

So when a member of the richest and most powerful family in the world is found brutally murdered, Sidney finds himself in charge of the most politically sensitive investigation Newcastle has ever seen.  Most alarming is that the bizarre method of this murder is identical to one carried out twenty years ago on St Libra where another member of the same family and his entire household were killed.  A murder for which Angela Tramelo, the only survivor, has been imprisoned ever since.

Angela had consistently claimed that the killings were the work of an alien.  So a massive expedition is launched to find this creature and prevent any interruption to the all important bio-fuel supply.  As the only witness, Tramelo is brought along.

As Sidney Hurst attempts to solve the murder in Newcastle amid the glare of the media and the focus of self serving politicians, the mission on St Libra is cut off and more killings begin.  Suspicion is leveled at Angela Tramelo.  But none know of her secret past and the real reason she came to St Libra in the first place.

  1. Sounds fun – a murder mystery involving a suspect that no one has encountered before!

It sounds a little bit high-concept to be set so near in the future though. Did you find it an immersive read? Sci-Fi is always a lot more gratifying when I can ‘believe’ what I’m reading.

    • Hi Jdoo. Yes it was a book I got immersed in. It’s a big book, but that’s par for the coarse with this author. I found the story very believable as, excluding the wormhole technology, the world is not that much different to now. Thanks for the comment.

      Mike.

  2. Hey, Mike! Great review on The Great North Road (no pun intended). How many pages does it have, give or take? Even though I love the genre, unfortunately nowadays I don’t have that much to read really long books anymore. I went through all of Lord of the Rings and the I Robot series, but I’d rather tackle something a little smaller these days.

    • Hi Daniel. The Great North Road is a big book even by Peter F Hamilton’s standards. 1086 and a bit pages. But it is a stand alone novel, where he usually writes a series of books. I strongly recommend you find the time to read it. Thanks for the comment.

      Mike.

  3. I’ve never heard of the author Peter F. Hamilton but The Great North Road seems like a very interesting book to read and try and figure out. I personally love sci-fi books especially when they include a murder mystery. I also really like that it is set in the near future making it seem realer just because this may happen one day soon. Nice summary by the way hoping to read more in the future.

    • Hi Destin. Although Peter F Hamilton writes sci fi now, he actualy started out writing crime novels. So The Great North rd is a natural progression. Thanks for the comment.

      Mike.
